Will my luggage be transferred during a connecting flight?
If you need to change flights before reaching your final destination, you’ll want to know what happens to your checked-in luggage and where you can collect it from the baggage reclaim area. If the transfer takes less than 24 hours, it is referred to as a transfer. If the transfer takes longer than 24 hours, it is referred to as a stopover. In the case of a stopover, your luggage will not be transferred to your final destination – you will need to collect it from the baggage reclaim area. Baggage transfer is only available for flights with a connection within 24 hours.
To be sure about your baggage, please ask at the check-in desk which baggage claim area you will need to collect your baggage from.
Transfer with the same airline or a partner airline
Your baggage will almost always be transferred to your final destination. There are a few exceptions, such as North America, Australia and South Africa. If you have a connecting flight there, you will need to collect your luggage from the baggage reclaim area and re-check it for your next flight.
Transport with two separate tickets on the same airline or partner airlines
If you have purchased two separate tickets, your luggage will never be transferred to your final destination. If you are flying with the same airline, you can ask at the check-in desk about the possibility of having your luggage transported to your final destination.
If you are unsure or have any questions, please contact our customer service centre.
Would you like to add checked-in luggage after booking or before departure? This is possible, except for United Airlines, American Airlines, Air Canada, ITA and codeshare flights operated by, for example, Lufthansa.
Are you flying with another airline? To assist you, please contact our customer service centre. Please ensure you have read your booking reference correctly. This is stated in your booking confirmation. One of our customer service agents will inform you of the charges and book your additional checked-in luggage. To book additional checked-in luggage, you will need to pay an administration fee of €16 per person, plus any airline charges for your additional checked-in luggage. You will receive confirmation of your baggage payment by email.
It is also possible to book suitcases at the airport. However, please bear in mind that this will incur higher costs.
When booking, you can see whether baggage is included in the ticket price or not. This is indicated by the following logos:

This logo means that checked-in luggage is included with this ticket (dimensions and weight may vary depending on the airline)

This logo means that checked-in luggage is not included in this ticket (dimensions and weight may vary depending on the airline).
If you wish to book (additional) checked-in luggage, you can do so with most airlines during the booking process. Once you have entered your personal details, you will be taken to the ‘baggage and seats’ booking step. Here you can see whether hand luggage is included in your ticket and what the dimensions are. Please note: dimensions and weight limits vary by airline. On the right-hand side, select the checked-in baggage you require (the baggage fee shown includes an administration charge).
However, there are some airlines where you cannot book additional checked-in luggage at the time of booking. With United Airlines, American Airlines, Air Canada, Alitalia and on codeshare flights, such as those operated by Lufthansa, you can only book and pay for your suitcases at the airport.
Would you like to add checked-in luggage after making your booking?
